  16. Missouri. His given name was Harold Jenkins, and he started
  17. off as a rock 'n' roller. He wasn't the handsomest guy in the
  18. world, and he didn't have the greatest voice. Nonetheless Conway
  19. Twitty became one of the most popular country stars ever and
  20. a canny manager of his career. His lyrics said the things women
  21. want to hear and men wish they could say. His hits included
  22. It's Only Make Believe, Hello Darlin' and numerous duets with
  23. Loretta Lynn. "It's 99% the song, not what I do," Twitty once
  24. said. He played the percentages and came out a winner.
