- <p> DIED. CONWAY TWITTY, 59, country music singer; in Springfield,
- Missouri. His given name was Harold Jenkins, and he started
- off as a rock 'n' roller. He wasn't the handsomest guy in the
- world, and he didn't have the greatest voice. Nonetheless Conway
- Twitty became one of the most popular country stars ever and
- a canny manager of his career. His lyrics said the things women
- want to hear and men wish they could say. His hits included
- It's Only Make Believe, Hello Darlin' and numerous duets with
- Loretta Lynn. "It's 99% the song, not what I do," Twitty once
- said. He played the percentages and came out a winner.
